Robert Fripp – Good Evening, Hippies (Frippertronics, Collaborations and Rarities) (2026) Review: …compiled by Robert Fripp, including Brian Eno, David Sylvian, Andy Summers, The League of Gentlemen and more. “[Panegyric label head] Declan Colgan told [Fripp’s manager] David Singleton: ‘Robert has more ampersands in his professional life than anyone I know!’ We went through three iterations of this CD – a David version, a Declan version, and then I made my own comments, and we have this CD that you have. Primarily this is stuff that I want to sit down and listen to. How do we begin? How do we get drawn into this? And then in the middle, when everything sags, what do you do there? And then at the end, well, how do you complete and wind this all up in such a way that the beginning and the end have gone full circle? And there you are.” 1 “Good evening hippies…” Taken from King Crimson live at Providence, Rhode Island, June ’74 2 Robert Fripp You Burn Me Up I’m a Cigarette (2021 Steven Wilson mix) The opening track proper on Fripp’s solo debut, 1979’s Exposure, this comes racing out of the traps. With Daryl Hall on vocals and Fripp largely swapping cross-picked tritones for straight-ahead rock chords, it’s as accessible as the great man gets. Taken from the Discipline Global Mobile Ltd album Exposure (Fourth Edition) 3 Robert Fripp Under Heavy Manners Here’s a fine track from the ‘Discotronics’ side of Fripp’s second solo album, released in 1980. On vocals is a certain Absalm el Habib – aka David Byrne – with the piece settling into a very Talking Heads-ish groove. Taken from the DGM album God Save The Queen/Under Heavy Manners 4 Sylvian / Fripp Brightness Falls (Live) David Sylvian and Fripp have made a number of albums together since 1993’s The First Day, but Fripp has chosen a superb live cut here, taken from the duo’s 1994 release Damage (originally released on 24-carat gold CD, naturally). Taken from the DGM album Damage 5 Robert Fripp and The League of Gentlemen Heptaparaparshinokh (2021 Steven Wilson mix) This is a highlight from the only album by Fripp’s self-described “second-division touring new wave instrumental dance band”. The band name is the same as his first group in the ’60s, but here the players include Barry Andrews, formerly of XTC, and Sara Lee, soon to join Gang Of Four. Taken from the DGM Exposures boxed set 6 “Can I play you some of the new things I’m doing which I think could be commercial” Taken from “Preface” on Exposure 7 Robert Fripp On My Mother’s Birthday A collection of unreleased Soundscapes, many recorded in 2005, this particular piece dates from 1997. As with the rest of this thoughtful, tranquil set, it finds Fripp evoking deeply felt loss, this time of his mother. Taken from the DGM album Love Cannot Bear: Soundscapes – Live In The USA 8 “Continue” Taken from the end of Under Heavy Manners 9 Sunday All Over the World Sunday All Over the World (Paul Stacey 2026 mix) This quartet, featuring Fripp, wife Toyah Willcox, Trey Gunn and Paul Beavis, released one underrated album in 1991. It’s been long unavailable but, as this remixed preview suggests, it’s set for reissue on DGM in the near future. Taken from DGM’s forthcoming newly mixed reissue of Kneeling At The Shrine 10 Robert Fripp 1984 (Mix 1) Subtitled ‘An Album of Frippertronics’, 1981’s Let The Power Fall documented Fripp’s instant compositions while on a solo tour in 1979. This is the brilliant and epic opening track, recorded at Vancouver’s Robson Square Theatre. Taken from the DGM album Let The Power Fall 11 Andy Summers and Robert Fripp I Advance Masked (2024 David Singleton mix) Summers and Fripp knew each other back in ’60s Bournemouth, with Fripp taking over from Summers as guitarist at the Majestic Hotel. Fripp relives those days in our interview, but meanwhile here’s the pair’s reunion from the 1982 album of the same name. Taken from the DGM album The Complete Recordings (1981 – 1984) 12 Jakszyk, Fripp & Collins A Scarcity of Miracles From one of the myriad Crimson ProjeKct off-shoots, this is the title track from the trio’s only album. The songs began as improvisations by Fripp and Jakko Jakszyk, before they added the reeds of Collins and then the rhythm section of Tony Levin and Gavin Harrison. Taken from the DGM album A Scarcity of Miracles (A King Crimson ProjeKct) 13 Fripp & Eno Evening Star The dynamic duo’s second album together was a quieter, more beatific affair than 1973’s (No Pussyfooting). By the time it was released in late ’75, Fripp was deep into his retreat at JG Bennett’s Sherborne House in Gloucestershire. Taken from the DGM album Evening Star 14 Robert Fripp Music for Quiet Moments 7: At the End of Time Recorded in the Wiltshire village of Broad Chalke in 2006, this is a wonderful example of Fripp’s latter-day Soundscapes work. Over vaguely ominous tones, he gradually brings in synth-esque melodies that build into twinkling arpeggios over 13 blissful minutes.
