Kaleidoscope is a book about some beta high school kid named Corey who thinks he's really cool, but is pretty much oblivious to the fact that he's a loser. The book begins Friday morning. Corey plans to tell this girl he likes that he loves her. What follows is a single day in Cory's life, skipping school, drinking, drugs narrated in an extremely exaggerated, fantastical style - poetic, imaginative, full of the pain and passion of youth. Mr. Raymond bellowed and moaned about numbers, yeah man, numbers and they swirled around my head, sevens turning to ones with letters that mixed into a jumble of calculus soup: black little squiggles that formed a cocoon and from it hatched a formula and god damn that thing was strong, it began to thrash itself against the black board, as Raymond fought it with chalk, striking it away with white powder marks, checking his calculator watching the monster's health points drop.
