Textbook in PDF format This book presents the transformational progress in next-generation advanced converter circuit topologies based on the unique electrical properties of wide-bandgap semiconductors, including silicon carbide (SiC) and gallium nitride (GaN). It addresses the opportunities for significant advances in power electronics circuit performance opened by the availability of wide-bandgap power devices and the challenges associated with using these devices that must be overcome when applying them. The authors tackle specific grand challenges in application areas covering a broad range of power electronics circuits and systems disciplines, including electric motor-driven systems, automotive applications, air/rail/ship propulsion, electric vehicle chargers, high-performance computing and data centers, power supplies, solar inverters, wind-electric systems, high/medium voltage transmission/distribution equipment and power electronics interacting with the grid, power conversion for grid storage, monolithic power processing, and solid-state circuit breakers. Advances in power electronics have been one of primary enablers of the unprecedented growth of renewable energy sources on the electrical power grid over the past several decades. Today’s transition toward widespread electrification is seen a key enabler to replace fossil fuels as a source of energy. A key component of power electronic systems is the semiconductor switching device which determines the frequencies and power levels at which the electronic system may operate. Along with key sub-systems such as gate drivers, passive components, and controller circuits, the switching device comprises a power electronics system. A significant portion of losses in a power electronic converter is dissipated in the power semiconductor devices. Historically, consequential innovations and non-incremental performance improvements in converter technology have been achieved with the advent of new generations of enhanced power semiconductor switches and their associated drive and controller circuits. Summarizing, this book seeks to accelerate the development and deployment of a new class of efficient, lightweight, and reliable power converters based on wide-bandgap (WBG) semiconductors. These power converters are designed to incorporate transformational system-level advances enabling effective operation at higher switching frequencies, higher temperatures, and lower losses. Hundreds of technical papers have been published on the subject of WBG-based power converters, including several comprehensive review/survey papers on different technical aspects of their operation. However, no book has been published yet that covers both the basic concepts and recent technology advances leading to the development of innovative power electronic circuits that have been optimized for wide-bandgap semiconductor devices. This book has been written to fill that critical gap. Wide Bandgap Power Electronics: Emerging Converter Technologies and Applications introduces readers to the unique characteristics of wide-bandgap power semiconductor devices and the revolutionary impact that they are capable of having on the performance of power converters in future power electronics applications and will be an invaluable resource for practicing engineers, researchers, and graduate students in the field of power electronics, applications, and systems.
