1080p AI upscales of all five films from Matthew Barney's The Cremaster Cycle, in HEVC/x265 starting from the highest quality or least compressed sources I could find and software encoded on the veryslow preset with (presumably) original AC3 audio from the DVDs. Cremaster 5 is enhanced from a different bootleg I have not seen anywhere else on the internet and also includes English subs for the Hungarian. More specific details for each film below: Cremaster 1, 4: Other versions I have found either on other torrents or elsewhere seem to be cropped to the 1.37 Academy ratio, but the sources for these contain the full frame. Could not find original/uncompressed sources for these, but as they are originally shot on BETA DV, this is not really an issue. For the same reasons, did very little AI enhancement, only very slight sharpening to compensate for compression, as these films are DV and aren't SUPPOSED to be greater than DVD quality. These have (I believe) original AC3 audio from the DVDs. Cremaster 2: Started from DVD .VOB files which appear to be original/uncompressed, deinterlaced with Hybrid, AI upscaled, then composited with a regular non-enhanced upscale to smooth it out. This process yielded a very high quality output with no noticeable AI artifacts that I can see, while still improving the original SD resolution to give the appearance of HD. Original AC3 audio, I believe 2 channel Dolby. Cremaster 3: Same process/result as Cremaster 2. I have put them together as the full film rather than including the two separate parts. Dolby 5.1 AC3 audio. Cremaster 5: An individual provided me a cleaner version of Cremaster 5 to work from, one I have never seen on any other source on the web. While this version appears to be from the same or at least a very similar VHS tape as the only other version I have seen, it is definitely an improvement and the colors are much more accurate compared to the other more widely available rip. The actual resolution is not much improved but there is slightly more detail in some scenes. In order to retain sound effects but improve audio range a bit I mixed the file's original audio with the higher fidelity tracks from the soundtrack, so while unfortunately a bit of the noise and harshness from the VHS is retained it is overall much cleaner. Individual also pointed me to the booklet to the soundtrack and I used this to create subtitles for the film (they are embedded in the .mkv). I decided to stick to the presumably preferred translation from the booklet so the subtitles are just the whole sentence that is sung during that time, rather than breaking it up into words or phrases (I also don't speak Hungarian and it was much simpler to match this way). Subtitles might be slightly going against the artist's intention but they are at least available. There are some parts where the original audio and the soundtrack audio seem slightly out of sync that I couldn't find a reason for, but they are brief and not extremely noticeable. Note on framerates: The one not entirely resolved question I had putting this together was whether the DVDs were video->film->DVD transfers, or direct video->DVD transfers (all films were shot on video, but are projected from 35mm transfers when exhibited). In the absence of evidence I would have assumed the former, and at first I believed this to be the case since Cremaster 2 is in a 1.85 aspect ratio, but I believe it was just shot that way on video, as the Cremaster 3 DVD is in regular HDV 16:9 and includes a soft telecine (according to my research Cremaster 3 is the only film shot in native 24P HDV), but Cremaster 2 does not. I think it's fair to assume these were done all at once with relatively the same process given what we know of them, and it wouldn't make sense to telecine 3 and not 2 if it was a film transfer, so I think we can safely assume these are video->DVD transfers. As a result, only Cremaster 3 has been detelecined and all others retain a 29.97 framerate. All production and editing files were kept uncompressed then final versions for upload were encoded to HEVC/x265 .mkvs on the veryslow preset using software encoding, copying the original AC3 audio either from disc files or another source which contained it
