Album Title: =1 Artist: Deep Purple Genres: Hard Rock The band Deep Purple has released a studio album "= 1", which for the first time features the parts of a new member of the ensemble, guitarist Simon McBride. Thanks to the camaraderie in the team and the efforts of long—time associate producer Bob Ezrin, the 23rd album of the legendary British turned out to be worthy of their own classics, Igor Gavrilov believes. It's hard to believe, but this is the debut album of the ninth Deep Purple line-up. According to the established tradition in the group, it is called "Mark IX". There was only one, but critically important member in the group. Instead of Steve Morse, who worked at Deep Purple from 1994 to 2022 and left to focus on caring for his sick wife, Simon McBride now plays guitar. As Steve Morse said before leaving the band, "I solemnly give him the keys to the vault where the secret of the riff 'Smoke on the Water' is hidden." Simon McBride is 45 years old, he is from Belfast and is fit to be the son of not only the rest of the band's musicians, but also many of its fans. He was not seen in high-profile projects, he began his career as a technician and driver of touring trucks, but by the early 2020s he managed to play on stage in solo shows by Deep Purple keyboardist Don Airey and vocalist Ian Gillan, as well as in the bands of Joe Satriani, Jeff Beck and Joe Bonamassa. In Deep Purple, he was accepted as a native, before McBride's first tour with the band, two rehearsals were enough for them to get used to each other. Except that outwardly he does not fit too well into the canonical image of the "legends of hard rock". Short haircut, casual attire without frills. A typical session musician, more club than stadium. By the time the album "=1" was released, Deep Purple fans understood that the new guitarist would not spoil the furrows. There was more excitement about the voice of 78-year-old Ian Gillan, whose four octaves captivated hearts in classic Deep Purple albums and in the rock opera "Jesus Christ is a Superstar". Deep Purple concerts have long been designed to give the vocalist more rest, hence the increasingly protracted instrumental solos. However, the new Deep Purple recordings are designed so that Ian Gillan is fully realized within his current vocal capabilities. Judging by the fans' first reactions, the song "Bleeding Obvious", which is the last song on the album, made the biggest impression on them. In place of the vocalist, it is easy to imagine someone with a higher and more flexible voice. However, Gillan is the co—author of the song, and in his performance this epic composition with a repeatedly changing rhythm and mood sounds unique. Perhaps a younger author would not have composed such a thing — there would not have been enough experience. Over the course of 13 tracks, the album "=1" demonstrates the entire stylistic spectrum of Deep Purple. They are still able to compose high-speed action films in the spirit of "Highway Star" ("Now You're Talking"), dance rock and rolls ("Old-Fangled Thing"), marching hard rock in the tradition of "Strange Kind of Woman" ("Lazy Sod") and electric ballads, who are still suitable for the role of a "slow guy" at a disco, but there are no such discos anymore. In their interviews before the release of "=1", the Deep Purple musicians noted that they are distinguished from their rocker peers by an unchanging sense of humor. For example, in the song "Portable Door" Ian Gillan talks about a secret door through which he can always slip out of any awkward situation to the nearest pub. In the lyrics, he laughs at the artificial digital world ("Pictures of You"), and at his own shortcomings — laziness against the background of world catastrophes ("Lazy Sod") and lack of financial acumen ("No Money to Burn"). To this it is worth adding a unique lyrical feeling, which is saturated with the songs "If I Were You", "Pictures of You" and "I'll Catch You". If in the opening song of the album "Show Me" Simon McBride alternates short technical riffs and his own sound with the manners of Richie Blackmore and Steve Morse, sometimes overlapping the corresponding parts, then in the ballads he perfectly maintains the languid lyrical sound, thanks to which Deep Purple were once able to appeal to an audience beyond the fan base. Deep Purple have entered that phase of their existence when no one expects miracles from them. The very fact of their performances will soon be regarded as a miracle, like the concerts of The Rolling Stones. One day, none of the "DNA carriers" of Deep Purple — neither Ian Gillan, nor Roger Glover, nor Ian Pace — will be able to go on stage. And then it's unlikely that anyone will seriously think about something like "Deep Purple holograms". They are not ABBA or Kiss, in their case it is not the show that matters, not the special effects, but the skill of live performance. But what will not lose relevance is their song catalog, which lives its life in cover versions, movies and games. The album "=1" added some wonderful melodies to the Deep Purple gold clip
