Alice (Camille Rowe) goes home to her husband, whom she regularly cheats on. The lover (Jeremy Skippy) is sitting next to him, he's driving. It's suspiciously empty, but when the girl notices blood splatters behind the cash register, it's too late: a maniac sniper (Stasha Stanich), who is holed up on a nearby billboard, opens the hunt. Director Frank Khalfun, judging by the filmography, likes non-standard locations. He already had a thriller about a woman alone with a maniac in a parking lot ("Parking Lot"), about a guy almost alone confronting wildlife on the beach ("Prey"), and several more paintings in the same spirit. In 2023, it was the turn of the midnight gas station on the third-rate American highway. Due to the fact that the film is advertised as a project by Alexander Azh, who, alas, is only a producer here, first of all, I want to compare the picture with his own "Oxygen" and "Trap". The paintings were made according to the same pattern: a girl finds herself alone with an inexorable circumstance that must kill her sooner or later, whether it's a lack of oxygen in a cryogenic chamber or an alligator in the basement. But "The trap. Doomsday Night" (in the original Night of the Hunted) is a canvas of a clearly lower category, not a single letter of the script approaching the ingenuity of the works of Azhe himself. The decision to make a maniac a sniper, in addition to being clearly budgetary, deprives the viewer not so much of bright colors or chase shots as of tension, suspense in general. It seems simply impossible to make parting with life within the framework of one picture such a mundane and uninteresting event as it is here. Thus, since the degree of brutality in the film is zero, then, on the one hand, the domestic ingenuity of the victim comes to the fore, who must use all means at hand to save, and on the other hand, the psychological component. That is, as if there should be a confrontation between two personalities, two motivations, two views on life. There's trouble with both. A maniac with a rifle is holed up outside, in the dark, on a billboard, a girl is hiding behind shelves with food and household chemicals. It would seem that you can just sit with a hammer or a knife in your arms until the morning, and then someone will finally call the police, and it will no longer be possible to shoot at a gas station in broad daylight. But Alice is not ready to wait, she wants everything at once, and as a result catches bullets one by one. Such heroes should not survive, but the screenwriters have a different opinion on this matter
