1950. Nine-year-old Diko lives with his parents, brother and sister in a Brazilian slum, from where there are only two ways out: to nut plantations or to prison. Since childhood, the boy has been passionate about playing ball, and this is not surprising – his father Wildly played football at a high level, but injury did not allow him to fully unleash his talent. But the father believes in the great future of the boy and secretly trains Wildly from his mother, a fierce opponent of games. When a scout of a big club pays attention to a talented teenager, Dicko himself and his family need to make a difficult choice: stay at home, where there is some kind of confidence in the future, or rush after a dream, illusory and blurred. The boy chose the latter and a year later, under the name Pele, he began a long journey of conquering the world, going crazy for playing football. It's stupid to argue, feature films about sports and champions are extremely thankless entertainment. The whole problem lies in the fact that a few minutes of fame, which also does not fall to everyone, is preceded by a boring period of hard training, unpresentable, hard, dirty, sweaty, exhausting. To demonstrate them is disrespectful to the viewer, but you can't rely on a miracle either – no one will deny that the athlete's work is hard. And even for one victory, there are a dozen injuries, defeats or second places, but I want to make a spectacular movie. So you either have to put on your underpants and scrupulously reproduce on the screen all the boring steps on the pedestal, carefully checking the list of achievements on Wikipedia, or take off the cross and recklessly sculpt your own story of a brilliant rise, a wonderful overcoming, ignoring the dark side of sports. The film about the "king of football" Pele went the second way. The second part of the full title of the film can be understood in two ways here – the legend and what kind of life path the screenwriters and directors of the Zimbalist brothers came up with for the legendary football player. There is not a word in the film about any serious problems, there are no really difficult spiritual and physical searches, there are not the slightest contradictions, doubts, mistakes. Pele is a simple, straightforward, unassuming and even stupid movie. This is not a biography, but a fairy tale tailored to the end result, a fantasy that "princesses don't poop." By and large, it is not too correct to call the film a biography: the plot focuses on only two episodes of Pele's life – his first successes in domestic football and his debut in the national team at the 1958 World Cup in Sweden. As you can see, the writers focused on the positive and motivating, completely forgetting about other aspects of the life of the "king of football". No, of course, as it should be, there are ridicule from the opponent in the film, and offensive jokes from senior teammates, and doubts about the correctness of choosing the path, and injury on the eve of an important game, even the very appearance of the nickname "Pele" is given with some anguish – but all this is presented in a puppet naive way. It's like watching not a large-scale drama about a man known all over the world, but a routine production of the school theater of the October and Pioneer era, when everyone just reads memorized lines, knowing that everything will predictably end with the victory of "ours"
