In the early 70s, high school friends John Murphy and Gary Klebe decided to form a band, despite their complete lack of musical education and any instruments. Within two years they bought a garage, tools, learned chords and listened to the music they loved - The Beatles, Big Star, Bowie, The Move, Todd Rundgren, Nils Lofgren - trying to find their own style. In the summer of 1973, Jeff Murphy, John Murphy's brother, borrowed money and bought a 4-track tape recorder. The result was the album Heads Or Tails (1974), recorded entirely at home. They also created their own label - Black Vinyl Records. In 1977, Shoes recorded Black Vinyl Shoes in Jeff Murphy's living room, pressing 1,000 copies on their own label.
