A war veteran, trying to save his wife from imminent death, seeks justice from God, gradually losing his own mind. His son Willard stays with his grandmother and stepsister, trying to become the complete opposite of his father and grow up to be a good and fair person. A married couple of serial killers are operating on the surrounding roads, and a local preacher, who inspires faith in the flock with the help of absurd rituals, is fleeing from justice and his own conscience. The characters somehow collide and influence each other's destinies. Antonio Campos' film at the launch stage attracted the attention of the public with a strong cast. Everyone's favorite Robert Pattinson is here, and the slightly timid but surprisingly talented Tom Holland, the textured Bill Skarsgard (the same intimidating clown from "It") and the rising star Eliza Scanlen. But what turned out to be a lure for the audience became almost the only advantage of the picture. Throughout the entire timekeeping, it does not leave a feeling that the director has not decided for himself what his movie will be about. Is it about unconditional faith in God, about fathers and children, about serial killers, or is it about the insidiousness of fate? Due to the fragmented nature of the plot, it is almost impossible to establish an emotional connection with the characters, who, however, do not have a backstory as such. The main motif of the film is in the air, like a bird straying from a flock that does not know where to land. The ongoing theme of childhood trauma and generational conflict is well demonstrated by Tom Holland's character. Attempts to avoid the fate of an abusive father turn into a failure: his image is somehow visible in the character and actions of the hero. And Lenore (Eliza Scanlen) inadvertently follows in the footsteps of her mother (Mia Wasikowska). In general, this could well be a good parable about the vicissitudes of fate and parental influence on children's lives, if not for the author's desire to tell about everything at once. Anyway, despite such dramatic flaws, there is something in the film that helps to preserve a single motive. Each character is haunted by a figure of God, and each of them is absorbed in their own religion. Those who devote themselves completely to faith are on the verge of insanity and fanaticism every minute. Those who believe in a higher power as something bright and unshakable fatally condemn themselves to misfortune. It's like the director is reminding us that nothing can save us from pain and death. After all, the devil is always here, and the evil that can be inside a person never sleeps
