Brought to you by TQMP The Quality Music Project Recorded live at the Amadeo Roldan Theater in Havana on March 25, 2007, Cesar Lopez' group Havana Ensemble took center stage with the backing of the Havana Chamber Orquestra under the direction of Ivan del Prado. Clasicos de Cuba was conceived from the top down as a CD in which style, respect and virtuosity balanced to build a convincing artistic image. Starting with classics of Cuban music, the saxophonist weaves a rosary of melodic motifs silhouetted against the subtly of a carefully elaborated harmonic sound without excesses. The soloist and the band play Rosa mustia by Angel Diaz, Quiereme y veras by Jose Antonio Mendez, Tu no sospechas by Marta Valdes, Llanto de luna by Julio Gutierrez, En nosotros by Tania Castellanos, Tu mi desengaÑo by Pablo Milanes, La tarde by Sindo Garay, Noche cubana by Cesar Portillo de la Luz and Scherezada by Piloto and Vera. The jazz leanings of Cesar -who had a prodigal career with Irakere and pianist Chucho Valdes and later put together Habana Ensemble- come through on different parts of the album.
