one of Dicks Americana collection 01 - Half Life 02 - Miss You Twice 03 - Willing To Trade 04 - St. Helena 05 - This Time 06 - Catalina 07 - I Thought That You Were Dead 08 - Lately 09 - Favorite Worry 10 - Via Washington Eric Luoma’s wistful, sleepy tenor set mostly to downtempo tunes, the mellow mood recalling the band’s 2002 disc Home Late. And the similarities don’t stop there; the likes of “Half Life” and “Catalina” come off as Luoma outtakes (to be generous) or self-plagiarism (to be blunt). On the bright side, the latter tune, an otherwise nondescript strummer, does boast a rhyming couplet so perfect it’s hard to believe no one’s thought of it before: “You’re up in Minnesota/Do you have someone to hold ya/When it’s cold?” There’s also a little Jayhawks jangle (“This Time”) and a lo-fi dose of Joe Henry faux-funk (“St. Helena”), but in the end, such slight deviations from the norm don’t equate to breaking new ground — and, as another North Star song-smith said, he not busy being born is busy dying. http://dickthespic.org/
