The Yorkshire Dales and the Lakes - Season 2 Written and narrated by poet and playwright Ian McMillan, The Yorkshire Dales and The Lakes celebrates life in two of our most cherished National Parks. Now England’s biggest expanse of protected countryside, these stunning areas inspire millions to visit every year... but they are more than a playground for tourists and adventurers: The Dales and The Lakes are also home to sixty-thousand people. This series meets those people who give a human face to these remarkable landscapes as the weather and the seasons ebb and flow. Episode 1: In the Lakes, champion sheep breeder Arnold Lancaster prepares his flock for the famous Westmorland County Show. In the Dales, the church bells at St Bartholomew's remain silent after their belfry has fallen into disrepair. Locals arrange a fund raiser to get the bells ringing again. Episode 2: In the Dales, John Dawson of Bleak Bank farm leaves his son William in charge on a trip away. William gets baling during a break in the weather. In the Lake District, GP Stuart Allen attempts a fifty-mile ultra-run that stretches the entire length of The Lakes. Episode 3: At England's last remaining slate mine in Honister, owner Joe Weir is running out of time to fulfil an order of Westmorland Green slate. At Bleak Bank Farm in the Dales, John and William Dawson need to bring their cows in for winter. Episode 4: When his sheep break out into a neighbouring farm, hill farmer and award-winning sheep breeder Arnold Lancaster needs to rebuild a dry stone wall. Rector Sarah Lunn is on a mission in and around Appleby-in-Westmorland, as she works hard to keep traditions alive and communities bonded across her twelve parishes. Episode 5: Near Windermere, upland farmers Pete and Rona Webster are expecting their first child as they prepare to move to the Dales and take over Rona's dad's farm as he retires. They plan to become the first producers of sheep's milk ice-cream in Yorkshire. Game dealer Andrew Dent and gamekeeper Ian Sleightholm are setting heather ablaze in Wensleydale. Episode 6: In the Dales, train fireman Martyn Soames prepares for one of the most scenic railway journeys in England, from Settle in Yorkshire to the Cumbrian capital of Carlisle. Farmers John and William Dawson are fighting to save the Dalesbred sheep from decline. In the Lakes, Debbie and Andy North are taking on one of Alfred Wainwright's hill walks - the assent to the top of Barrow. Episode 7: John and William Dawson risk having to pour their milk down the drain when a tanker struggles to make it up to their farm. When Robin Askew is called out with his gritting tractor, he discovers day-trippers stranded on a remote stretch of road. At Honister, in the Lake District, mine-owner Joe Weir sets up an impromptu ski resort as friends and family enjoy the alpine conditions and spectacular landscape. Episode 8: In Austwick, farming couple Pete and Rona Webster are moving house from Windermere to the Dales, while also about to start milking sheep in preparation for making ice-cream, and coping with a young baby. Episode 9: Pete's a craftsman who contributes a huge amount to life in the National Park. In this episode, he repairs an industrial relic and rescues a sheep that's plunged into a pothole. In Bowness, on the shores of Windermere, Phil and Joyce McQuire take their first steps in running a guest house, and help a guest to devise a secret marriage proposal in a scenic spot. Episode 10: James Ratcliffe returns to Sedbergh with his new family after 19 years away, with plans to transform a pub into a top-end restaurant.
