"Every week on American Top 40, based on Billboard's national statistics of record sales and radio station airplay, we count down the most popular songs in the Nation. Now, at number eight, moving up one, it's Boston with 'More Than A Feeling'." American Top 40 with Casey Kasem aired on radio from July 4, 1970 until August 6, 1988. This recording is a rebroadcast from internet radio. In this countdown: The first single from Stevie Wonder's new album (which debuted at number one on the album chart) debuts on the hot 100 all the way up at number 40! John Travolta in on the chart (at number 38) with his SECOND top 40 hit. A listener wants to know, "In the rock era, which album by a female singer has occupied the number one spot for the most weeks?" Casey tells us about the top two. Another listener wants to know if there has ever been a top 40 hit that wasn't a vocal, instrumental, or spoken word performance? Casey says there were two, and they were completely different types of performances. Casey reveals what group has had the most chart albums. This group put 36 albums on the Billboard chart in 12 years, and it wasn't the Beatles, The Rolling Stones, The Beach Boys, or The Supremes. Casey explains how Nadia got her theme (by Barry Devoreaux & Perry Bodkin, Jr, at number 9). There is a song in the countdown by the group who has had more of their songs covered by other artists (excepting The Beatles) than any other group in history. 40: I Wish - Stevie Wonder 39: You Are My Starship - Norman Connors 38: Whenever I'm Away From You - John Travolta 37: Lost Without Your Love - Bread 36: Shake Your Rump To The Funk - Bar-Kays 35: Somebody To Love - Queen 34: Jeans On - David Dundes 33: I Only Want To Be With You - Bay City Rollers 32: Magic Man - Heart 31: Don't Fear The Reaper - Blue Oyster Cult 30: Fernando - ABBA 29: If You Leave Me Now - Chicago 28: It's A Long Way There - Little River Band 27: Hello Old Friend - Eric Clapton 26: Livin' Thing - E.L.O. 25: Do You Feel Like We Do - Peter Frampton 24: Dazz - Brick 23: Rockin' Me - Steve Miller Band 22: Hot Line - Sylvers 21: Love Ballad - L.T.D. 20: After The Lovin' - Englebert Humperdinck 19: Love Me - Yvonne Elliman 18: Stand Tall - Burton Cummings 17: Best Disco In Town - The Richie Family 16: I Never Cry - Alice Cooper 15: Sorry Seems To Be The Hardest Word - Elton John EXTRA: Family Affair - Sly & The Family Stone 14: Just To Be Close To You - Commodores 13: Disco Duck - Rick Dees 12: You Make Me Feel Like Dancing - Leo Sayer 11: Nights Are Forever Without You - England Dan & John Ford Coley 10: You Are The Woman - Firefall 9: Nadia's Theme - Barry Devoreaux & Perry Bodkin, Jr. 8: More Than A Feeling - Boston 7: Beth - Kiss 6: You Don't Have To Be A Star - Marilyn McCoo & Billy Davis Jr 5: Wreck Of The Edmond Fitzgerald - Gordon Lightfoot 4: Muskrat Love - The Captain & Tennille 3: Love So Right - Bee Gees 2: Rubberband Man - Spinners 1: Tonight's The Night - Rod Stewart NOTE: Premier Radio was goofing up the hourly intros, so I let British Amy IVONA take over.
