I doubt much can be said about Leonard Cohen that would come close to describing something like "who he is". *Who he is* is probably most accurately self-described in his art; in his poetry. Much of which is simply inaccessible to anyone who hasn't studied his work intensely and from the beginning. The reason being that the references he chooses happen to be the ones he's been working with for a long time, and almost nobody knows any of them. And you won't be able to figure them out by listening to the lyrics. For instance, in Ten New Songs, one might think that a song entitled "Alexandra leaving" is speaking about a woman perhaps leaving someone for some reason. But in actual fact "Alexandra" in that song alludes to Alexandria, the ancient (and destroyed) "city of enlightenment", and so what "Alexandria leaving" could possibly represent (since cities don't normally "leave") is a kind of mystery. Cohen is largely concerned with ancient times. For example figures like Dante play a key role in his lyrics. Often he is answering a question of Dante's (or another of the Great Ancients), or putting a new one forward. I suspect that "Alexandria", for him, represents the arrogance of a belief in a rational, ordered world that can be understood. And, of course, all that comes with such a belief system. Alexandria may signify an *unwelcome* rejection of the mysterious and unfathomable nature of existence itself. In that light, the lyrics actually make some sense! But I'm only guessing.
