ADONIS, the pen name of Ali Ahmad Said (b. 1930), is a Syrian poet, essayist and translator. Imprisoned in Syria in the mid-1950s as a result of his political beliefs and activities, Adonis settled abroad and has made his career largely in Lebanon and France. He is a perennial contender for the Nobel Prize in Literature. Adonis's poetry and prose have aroused much controversy in the Arab world, both for their provocative content and their arresting style. Grounded in traditional Arabic poetic styles, Adonis developed a new way of expressing modern sentiments. Although influenced by classical poets, he started at a relatively early age to experiment with the prose poem, giving it density, tension, metaphors, and rhythm. He also broke with the diction and style of traditional poems, introducing a new and powerful syntax and a form of complex Surrealism influenced by the work of Sufi poets. Through his innovative use of language, imagery, and narrative technique, Adonis has played a leading role in the modernist revolution within Arabic literature, exerting a seismic influence on Arabic poetry comparable to T. S. Eliot's in the anglophone world. Originally published to widespread acclaim, A TIME BETWEEN ASHES AND ROSES (1970) explores the human condition by examining language and love, race and favor, faith and dogma, war and ruin. In the lyrical "This Is My Name " and "Introduction to the History of the Petty Kings," the poet ponders Arab defeat and defeatism, while "A Grave for New York" focuses on Vietnam-era America. THE PAGES OF DAY AND NIGHT (1994) sets in motion a stream of unending inquiry with difficult questions about exile, identity, language, politics, and religion. Adonis explores the pain and otherness of exile, a state so complete that absence replaces identity and becomes the exile's only presence. The recently-translated SELECTED POEMS (2010) provides a comprehensive survey of Adonis' poetic work. It demonstrates the poet's profound affection for Arabic and European lyrical traditions even as his poems work to destabilize those very aesthetic and moral sensibilities. The collection positions the work of Adonis within the pantheon of the great poets of exile, including César Vallejo, Joseph Brodsky, and Paul Celan, providing for English readers the most complete vision yet of the work of the man whom the cultural critic Edward Said called "the most eloquent spokesman and explorer of Arab modernity." In AN INTRODUCTION TO ARAB POETICS (1985), Adonis examines the oral tradition of the pre-Islamic poetry of Arabia and the relationship between Arabic poetry and the Qur'an, and between poetry and thought. He also assesses the challenges of modernism and the impact of Western culture on the Arab poetic tradition. SUFISM AND SURREALISM (1995) draws parallels between the two streams of thought, contesting that God, in the traditional sense, does not exist in either Surrealism or Sufism, and that both are engaged in parallel quests for the nature of the Absolute, through "holy madness" and the deregulation of the senses.
