=========================================================== DAD'S ARMY ~~ Season 1 Episode 1 The Man and the Hour ( BBC Full-Cast Radio Comedy ) Run-time 30 minutes =========================================================== In World War II, some two years before the USA came to our assistance in defeating the NAZI's, the United Kingdom were nearly bombed into surrender by Hitler's superior air power and thousands were killed, mainly in London, during what is referred to as The Blitz. It was expected that following these massive air-strikes that a full scale invasion of Great Britain would take place. With most of our young men called-up to serve in the navy, army and air force, Britain was left defenseless against a possible invasion by the NAZI's. This lead the government of the day, to form a national defense force called the Home Guard. The Home Guard or Dad's Army as they were affectionally known consisted mainly of men too old to fight in the regular services and some young boys who were considered not old enough to fight. Initially, with no weapons, they armed themselves with pitch-forks, knives and the occasional shot-gun. As crazy as it may sound today, this ineffective troop were charged with fighting Hitler's crack SS troops should they invade.
