GERALD MURNANE (b. 1939) is one of Australia’s most highly regarded authors. He began as a writer of confessedly autobiographical fiction of a talented but fairly conventional kind, but developed eventually into a writer who has been variously classified as postmodernist or fabulist and who has been described hyperbolically by at least one Australian critic as "the most original writer this country has produced." Murnane's first books, TAMARISK ROW (1974) and A LIFETIME ON CLOUDS (1976), seem to be semi-autobiographical accounts of his childhood and adolescence. Both are composed largely of very long but grammatical sentences. He attained his mature style with THE PLAINS (1982), a short novel about an unnamed filmmaker who travels to "inner Australia", where he endeavours to film the plains under the patronage of wealthy landowners. It is both a metaphysical parable about appearance and reality, and a parodic examination of traditions and cultural horizons. A book of essays, INVISIBLE YET ENDURING LILACS (2005), describe his dislocated youth in the suburbs of Melbourne and rural Victoria in the 1950s, his debt to writers as unlike as Adam Lindsay Gordon, Marcel Proust and Jack Kerouac, his obsession with racehorses and grasslands and the Hungarian language, and above all, his dedication to the worlds of significance that lie within, or just beyond, the familiar details of Australian life. Murnane's first work of fiction in over a decade, BARLEY PATCH, appeared in 2009 and was followed by A HISTORY OF BOOKS (2012) and A MILLION WINDOWS (2014). Will Heyward suggests that these three latter works may be seen as a single, continuous project, containing "a form of fiction defined by a fragmentary style that avoids plot and characterization, and is instead narrated by association and the fugue-like repetition and variation of images." While his reputation rests largely on his longer works of fiction, his short stories stand among the most brilliant and idiosyncratic uses of the form since Borges, Beckett, and Nabokov. Brutal, comic, obscene, and crystalline, STREAM SYSTEM (2018) is a compendium of stories published from 1985 to 2012. The following books are in ePUB format unless otherwise noted: * Barley Patch (Dalkey Archive, 2011) * Border Districts (Giramondo, 2017) * History of Books, A (Giramondo, 2012) * Inland (Giramondo, 2013) * Invisible Yet Enduring Lilacs: Essays (Giramondo, 2007) * Landscape with Landscape (Penguin, 1987) -- PDF * Lifetime on Clouds, A (Text Publishing, 2013) * Million Windows, A (Giramondo, 2014) * Plains, The (Text Publishing, 2012) * Something for the Pain: A Memoir of the Turf (Text Publishing, 2015) * Stream System: Collected Short Fiction (FSG, 2018) * Tamarisk Row (Giramondo, 2008) _____________________________________________________________________________ CONTACT ME: You can reach me with comments, suggestions, requests, error reports, etc., at TPB's forum, SuprBay (you will need to register an account): https://pirates-forum.org/User-workerbee PLEASE HELP TO SEED!
