The Exorcist (Unofficial 45th Anniversary Version) When Warner Bros. studio executive and producer, John Calley, recommended several cuts to William Friedkin's original edit of THE EXORCIST, he trimmed off about 12 minutes, leaving the running time of the final theatrical version at just over 2 hours. These cuts were made towards improving the pacing and tone of the film. The infamous “Spider-walk” scene didn’t make the original edit for technical reasons—the wires used in the stunt were too conspicuous. Of all these cuts, the only one, in retrospect, that hurt the pacing and continuity of the film was the "First Doctor Visit," in which the idea that Regan was manifesting behavioural problems is first introduced. This cut scene along with others, including the “Spider-walk,” plus some CGI-tweaking and new music cues, were baked together for 2000’s “The Version You’ve Never Seen” re-release. While most of the 2000 additions were successful, the subliminals that Friedkin inserted using CGI, I imagine irresistibly, as well as the “Spider-walk” (itself a scene made presentable using CGI) have not stood the test of time due to their tendency to take away from the film’s inherent documentary feel. This “fan cut” attempts to recreate the original, pre-Calley edit of THE EXORCIST by restoring all 12 minutes of its cut footage back into the theatrical version of the film; when possible, elements from the theatrical version are used by default. Blatty’s preferred ending, the exchange between Father Dyer and Lieutenant Kinderman, has been moved to an after-credits sequence, which serves to maintain the original somber ending while still leaving open a more light-hearted option.
