The animation style is initially disappointing, like an April fools "fuck you" to the viewer. But as animator cameos start to play, and the story is set up, it gradually becomes clear that the director is not insulting the viewer, but crafting his work as finely as the budget for a "joke show" can allow. GMPs fascination with a facet of foreign culture, and deliberate disrespect of a local one, revives an old story that would otherwise be forgotten outside its home. A spark of plausible dependability in its origin lets creator Max Simonet revive the gods we no longer think we need, and pass them on to a new generation to consume. The third part of the triad, GMPs Anime roots, provides a direction and a medium, however it has long since outgrown the theme of its predecessor. Unfortunately GMPs impenetrability and time commitment probably put it past anyone reviewing for a job.
