Major contribution of this chapter is to guide the reader regarding the simulation of various sliding mode controllers using MATLAB. This has been accomplished with the help of solved examples for which the MATLAB code has been provided in the appendix. The control laws and relevant dynamics of the system to be controlled (where applicable) are provided. The details of “why” the controller works have been left out but the interested readers may refer the references cited in various sections of this chapter. Despite many of the sliding mode control approaches not being discussed in this chapter, the chapter still provides value for the reader in getting started on the conceptualization and MATLAB simulation of various sliding mode controller design schemes. Once the reader is familiarized with the control schemes and the corresponding MATLAB codes discussed in this chapter, self-learning can be employed in enhancing the knowledge bank and understanding the latest variations and improvements in the mainstream control design methods.
